About EMDR

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing and is a recognised evidence-based psychological therapy. It helps the brain to process traumatic or difficult events which are causing psychological distress. EMDR can help with a wide range of difficulties, from traumatic events, to phobias and social anxiety.

Recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Institute for Health Care and Excellence (NICE), EMDR has a reputation for being an extremely effective and robust way of dealing with trauma and is quickly becoming the preferred therapy among trauma specialists.

Typically provided over 8 to 12 sessions, EMDR allows a person to experience a decrease in their symptoms and distress allowing them more effective ways to get on with their lives and feel better.

The video below will explain EMDR in more detail. It is provided courtesy of the EMDR International Association.

Assessment

Sometimes we know something is wrong but can't fully understand our difficulties. You are the expert on your life and we have the clinical expertise to help you.

Your 15-minute phone assessment will be completed in a supportive way to identify the best treatment model or combination that will be used to help you understand your distress and get treatment.

By completing this short assessment session with us then we will have a better understanding of how to help you, and it will allow us to work together better. Following this short assessment you will be assigned a therapist for further treatment.

Sessions

After your initial assessment, you will be allocated to a trained EMDR therapist who will discuss the frequency and duration of the sessions required. This will depend on many factors including what issues you and your therapist aim to work through and how much time the therapist feels will be adequate to achieve this.

You may be asked to attend weekly or fortnightly sessions but again this will depend on your availability. Most sessions will be 1 hour long, and for sessions where your therapist is processing a memory with you they will allow up to 90 minutes (there is no extra charge for longer sessions).

Therapists

All of the EMDR therapists at Solace Health Care are fully trained in EMDR skills and techniques. They are all members of the EMDR UK & Ireland Association and adhere to standards of practice.

Our therapists are all experienced health and care professionals with lengthy experience in a variety of settings including many years in Nursing, Psychology, Social Work and Psychotherapy.

They are all fully insured. Please feel free to have a chat with your therapist about their training background and qualifications.

Confidentiality

What is discussed in therapy is bound by confidentiality to allow you a safe place to discuss your difficulties. There are just a few exceptions to this which your therapist will discuss with you in your first session.

Each EMDR session is £70. Payment is required by the day of your appointment. This can be made by cash or bank transfer. If you prefer bank transfer please discuss this further with your therapist.
